Origins and History
The Migliarino, San Rossore, Massaciuccoli Natural Park is a protected area established on December 13, 1979.
It extends along the coastal strip of the provinces of Pisa and Lucca, including the municipalities of Pisa, Viareggio, San Giuliano Terme, Vecchiano and Massarosa, for a total of over 23,000 hectares.
It includes Lake Massaciuccoli and the mouths of the Serchio, Arno, and Fiume Morto rivers. In 2005, it was awarded the prestigious European Diploma of Protected Areas .
Landscapes and Nature of the Park
The Park is divided into several areas, including the Macchia Lucchese , a wooded area between Viareggio, Torre del Lago Puccini and the coast, and the Massaciuccoli area, which includes the lake and the surrounding marshland.
One third of the park's surface is covered by forests with poplars, alders, ash trees, holm oaks and above all pines , both maritime and domestic.
A variety of natural environments coexist in balance, offering unique landscapes rich in biodiversity.
